MARINE CONSERVATION SOCIETY
ABOUT THE MARINE CONSERVATION SOCIETY
The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) is the leading UK charity protecting our seas, shores and wildlife. Our seas and our future health, wealth and wellbeing are inextricably linked. The charity’s mission is to drive change in government policy, industry practice and individual behaviour that results in measurable improvements in the state of our seas. You can read their blueprint for achieving seas fit for life here.
MCS was started by volunteers in 1983; a group of pioneering scuba divers who saw first-hand the damage being wrought on our marine environment. They now have a network of over 400 active Sea Champion volunteers and thriving high profile projects like the Great British Beach Clean, Good Beach Guide and Good Fish Guide, which inspire and inform millions of people every year.
THE GOOD FISH GUIDE
The MCS Sustainable Seafood Programme continues to influence increasing consumer demand for fish and seafood from sustainable sources. MCS rates the sustainability of nearly 700 sources of fish and seafood available in the UK on a traffic light system, publishing this data as the Good Fish Guide. First launched as a book in 2002, the Good Fish Guide is now a dynamic website, pocket guide, and app (relaunched with additional features in 2016).
MCS fish and seafood advice reaches in excess of half a million people each year directly, and even more through hundreds of seafood outlets including the House of Commons and Masterchef. The ratings data is also integral to us as part of our Sustainable Fish Cities pledge signing in May 2015 whereby we agreed to incorporate MCS ratings for all 1-3 (Green ) rated , own brandproducts on our website This information is refreshed on a twice yearly basis in line with the MCS updates.
